Palau Senate president passes away

KOROR (Palau Senate) — The Senate of the Seventh Olbiil Era Kelulau – Palau’s national legislature — would like to inform the public of the passing of Senate President Johnny Reklai.
Reklai passed away on Sunday, March 11, at the age of 58 while fishing near Ngarchelong state.
A state funeral will be held on March 23 at the Capitol in Ngerulmud, Melekeok state.
Reklai was one of Palau’s most senior politicians, beginning his political career in 1979 when he was selected as a member of the First Constitutional Convention of the Republic of Palau, representing the state of Ngarchelong.
He subsequently served in the House of Delegates representing his home state of Ngarchelong in the first, second and third OEKs.
Reklai was elected to his first term as senator in the fourth OEK and was subsequently re-elected to the fifth, sixth, and seventh national legislatures.
A successful private businessman, Reklai owned and operated business ventures in various fields, including investment and development, shipping, retail, finance, tourism, and news publication.
Reklai was born on July 1, 1948, to the Reklai Baul of the state of Ngarchelong and Remurang Reklai of the state of Ngaraard.
He attended Koror Elementary School, graduated from Palau High School, and attended the University of Guam.
He is survived by his wife Loretta Wong Reklai, children, and numerous brothers and sisters.
