Dededo skate park breaks ground

IN ABOUT eight months, the young people of Guam will have a safe skate park with the expected completion of the construction of the Dededo Skate Park.
Yesterday afternoon, the Guam Housing and Urban Renewal Authority and the Dededo Mayor’s Office broke ground on the buffer strip.
According to a media release from the governor’s office, “the new recreational facility will serve our community and help promote active, healthy lifestyles among our youth.”
The 10,000-square foot skate park will provide skateboarders and skaters with a moon bay, a fishbowl, and rails.
GHURA is able to construct the park through a $426,000 Community Development Block Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Island youth who do skate have been using parking lots, village parks and other venues that aren’t safe to skate on.
20-year-old skateboarder Frank Unisog of Harmon said he is excited about the park.
“It is a really good idea. I really like it. Finally, we have a place to go to,” Unisog told Variety.
The park is one of many projects of GHURA and the governor’s office aimed at giving the youth a place to “hang out.”
“This new facility provides a safe place for our children to play and grow and it is essential that we continue to nurture their development beyond the classroom,” said Gov. Felix P. Camacho yesterday.
The buffer strip is located to the right of the current Dededo Guam Police Precinct.
