All set for Micronesian summit

THE administration is all set to host the 7th Western Micronesia Chief Executives Summit and says the cash-strapped government will not spend a lot of money for the event.
Press Secretary Charles P. Reyes Jr. said Gov. Benigno R. Fitial still believes that the regional summit is important in dealing with the issues confronting the islands, particularly that of expensive imported fuel.
The governor returned to work this week after having his final diagnosis in California following a series of back surgeries.
“(The governor) feels that regional cooperation is important,” said Reyes, adding that Fitial specifically wants to explore the possibility of establishing a regional concession and buying imported fuel in bulk to get “volume discounts.”
Reyes did not specify the CNMI’s projected expenses in hosting the three-day regional summit scheduled for March 21-23 but described it as “manageable.”
The summit is held every year by the chief executives of Guam, the Northern Marianas, Yap and Palau.
