A SENATOR wants to honor a
local woman who served as a midwife and nurse on Tinian despite not having
a license to do so, by naming the islands health center after her.
Sen. Henry H. San Nicolas, Covenant-Tinian, introduced Senate Bill 15-80
which seeks to rename the Tinian Health Center after the late Lucia Chiang
Villagomez Arizapa.
The Senate unanimously passed S.B. 15-80 during its session last week.
San Nicolas said Arizapa dedicated many years of service to the people
of Tinian as a nurse and midwife.
Though she was not officially licensed to practice, the then-Trust Territory
government hired her to work at the Tinian Health Center.
San Nicolas proposes to appropriate $2,000 to finance the renaming of
the health center which will be called the Lucia Chiang
Villagomez Arizapa Memorial Health Center.
The new name shall be prominently affixed at the main entrance to
the facility, the height of the letters not less than 10 inches. The mayor
of Tinian and Aguiguan shall ensure that the change of name in Section
2 of this Act is completed by Dec. 24, 2007, the bill stated.
