DEQ: Recycling center violates environmental regs

(DEQ) — The Division of Environmental Quality recently served Saipan Triple Star Inc. with an administrative order for violating the Commonwealth Environmental Protection Act, the Commonwealth Solid Waste Management Act, CNMI Solid Waste Management Regulations, and the terms of its recycling permit.
DEQ inspectors observed broken glass, used tires, plastic bags, seat cushions, and broken ceramics, among other types of debris not permitted at the As Perdido facility.
DEQ believes that the recycling facility is being operating in a manner that may pose a risk to human health and the environment.
The recycling center was ordered to cease and desist disposal of solid waste at the facility.
DEQ will impose civil penalties of $1,000 per violation per day, as authorized by the Solid Waste Management Act, for failure to comply with the administrative order.
In addition, DEQ may assess a civil penalty of up to $25,000 per violation per day for failure to comply with the Commonwealth Environmental Protection Act.
