For several years the Larry L. Hillblom Foundation has generously
supported programs in the Northern Mariana Islands.
Most recently a $40,000 grant has been given to the Commonwealth Diabetes
Coalition through the Ayuda Network.
These funds will be used to support a community based diabetes education
and awareness program in the CNMI.
In addition to this project the foundation has also funded Project Familia.
This program, funded through a $150,000 multi-year grant to Western Michigan
University, is in collaboration with the Public School System to develop
a nutritional curriculum at the elementary schools to prevent and reduce
childhood obesity.
There has also been a $100,000 grant to support a doctors exchange
between the Commonwealth Health Center and the University of California-San
Francisco.
This program has allowed medical residents from California to treat patients
locally and improve the overall care at CHC.
The foundation, moreover, has provided $150,000 over two years to the
American Red Cross-NMI chapter to purchase critically needed medical equipment
for CHC which has included ultrasounds, endoscopes, infant warmers and
other prenatal equipment.
Larry Hillblom was a long-time resident of the CNMI and his generosity
lives on through his support of these valuable programs.
