Navy man dies in shooting incident

By Gerardo R. Partido
Variety News Staff

ONE of the sailors involved in a shooting incident at Camp Covington yesterday died, the Navy’s public affairs office confirmed.
Two sailors were rushed to Naval Hospital early yesterday morning after shots were fired shortly after 8 a.m.
One died yesterday afternoon while the other is still in critical condition, Navy spokesman Lt. Donnell Evans told Variety.
One sailor has been taken into custody in connection with the incident and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service has started an investigation.
The Navy has not yet released the identities of the three sailors.
The whole Navy community was talking about the incident yesterday and many “theories” have been put forward as to the cause of the shooting, including a possible “love triangle” or a disgruntled worker engaged in indiscriminate shooting, a Variety source said.
But Evans stressed that the incident is still under investigation and the cause of the shooting is still undetermined.
According to Evans, the sailors belonged to NMCB 74, which is a unit of the U.S. Naval Construction Force, more popularly known as the “Seabees.”
Although the identities of the sailors have not yet been released, Evans said family members have already been informed.
Evans said the incident happened “on-base” and NCIS has already secured the place where the incident took place to gather more information about the shooting.
According to Variety sources, the incident could have taken place either in the armory or on the shooting range, and that the weapon used was “a Navy weapon.”
Evans said the sailor in critical condition can be taken care of on island and that, so far, the critically injured sailor still does not require medical evacuation to an off-island facility.
