Specialist Stein receives Segway

WASHINGTON (WRO) — On March 14, U.S. Army specialist and wounded Iraq War veteran Joshua P. Stein was hereattending a ceremony where he would be presented with a “Segway” from Segs4Vets and Disability Rights Advocates for Technology, a national non-profit corporation with a goal of providing assistance and opportunities to injured and disabled veterans.
Stein was among 15 soldiers and sailors receiving their own personalized “Segway,” a two-wheeled, self-balancing personal transporting device that is powered by electric motors and can travel up to 12.5 miles per hour and could help enhance their mobility and independence in their daily lives.
Stein’s wife Nicole, daughter Jasmine and staff-members from the office of Washington Rep. Pete A. Tenorio were on hand to witness Stein receive his Segway.
The son of Jesse P. Stein of Saipan is on active duty with the Army and still receiving care and therapy from Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio.
On April 16, 2006 Specialist Stein, attached to the 1st Battalion, 66AR, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, was wounded in Taji, Iraq when the Bradley Fighting Vehicle he was driving was hit by an IED.
Upon recovery, Stein was honored with the Bronze star, Purple Heart, and the Combat Action Badge.
“I truly commend and honor Specialist Stein’s strength, spirit, and determination in recovering from his injuries,” said Tenorio. “Specialist Stein is a shining example of the young men and women soldiers of the CNMI who have served with distinction and the unwavering commitment to protect and defend our country at all costs.”
Following further care at Brooke Army Medical Center, Stein will be relocating with his family to San Diego, California and looks forward to attending San Diego State University.
