GUAM and the Commonwealth
of the Northern Marianas Islands have been placed, once again, under a
haze advisory.
The advisory will remain in effect until 3 p.m. today, unless the Guam
Environmental Protection Agency feels that it should be extended.
According to the National Weather Service in Tiyan, persistent low-level
winds from north-northeast of the islands will continue to carry the haze
down to Guam.
As of 11 a.m. yesterday, visibility on Guam and Rota had dropped to six
miles in just a few hours.
Smoke from fires in southeast Asia is the primary haze component
based on wind and aerosol observations, the NWS special weather
statement read. Winds...will also help bring down some sulfurous
emissions from the Anatahan volcano.
The temperature inversion will help concentrate the haze by trapping it
closer to the ground, according to the NWS. The haze is not expected to
clear out until this evening.
The GEPA advisory recommends that residents with respiratory ailments
and heart problems stay indoors and reduce physical exertion or outdoor
activity during this time. Anyone suffering from respiratory illness should
seek appropriate medical advice if they are affected by the reduced quality
of outdoor air.
Healthy people may also be affected by the haze. All residents need to
be aware of the situation and reduce outdoor activity until the haze moves
out of the area.
