Judge Katherine Maraman of
the Guam Superior Court was appointed to the position of Part Time Associate
Justice of the Palau Supreme Court.
President Remengesau appointed Maraman because the Supreme Court utilizes
part time justices in cases where conflicts prevent full-time justices
from hearing a case.
Maraman has a distinguished record both as an attorney and a judge in
Guam.
During her career, she has worked for all three branches of the government
of Guam, serving as legal counsel to Governor Joseph Ada from 1988-1994
and as a legal counsel to the 14th and 18th Guam Legislatures, before
being appointed as Associate Judge of the Superior Court of Guam in 1994.
The press statement from the Presidents Office said that she has
earned the "respect and admiration of her colleagues in the legal
profession."
The president said the appointment was based on the "sound recommendation
of the judicial nominating commission."
He said he is looking forward to Maraman on her next trip to Palau.
According to the judicial nominating commission Maraman has been the "workhorse"
Superior Court of Guam for major and high profile cases the other judges
recused themselves from.
The commission said that Maraman s not a Guamanian or Chamorro but "because
of her deep respect for other cultures , she has been accepted by the
people and leaders of Guam to sit as a judge. Judge Maraman has visited
Palau more than any of the nominees. With her professional commitment
and genuine interest in our people and country, she is professional ,
hardworking and highly disciplined as a judge. She is strong, steady and
highly principled."
