THE U.S. Department of Education
will provide $200,000 to the Public School System for its after-school
tutorial program.
PSS federal programs officer and acting finance director Tim Thornburgh
said they received the approval last week.
The $200,000 will be used in the enforcement of our after-school
tutorial program in all junior and high schools, he told Variety
yesterday, adding that 500-600 students will benefit from the program.
PSS has been getting $150,000 each year since it began implementing the
program in elementary schools in 1994.
For secondary schools, the funding will come from USDOEs child care
program.
This will be the first time in 10 years that our junior and high
schools will benefit from this program. This will be enforced next month
among all our schools, Thornburgh said.
This will help students who need additional instruction and those
who need to schedule one more course that would fit into their daily schedule
so they can do an after-school format to enable them to graduate on time,
Thornburgh said, adding that the fund will be used to hire instructors
for the program and resource materials.
Each year, USDOE provides PSS with a consolidated grant amounting to $9.2
million.
