Precinct 4 group says GOP board luring them into a trap

By Emmanuel T.Erediano
Variety News Staff

THE Republicans of Precinct 4 yesterday said the GOP leadership is trying to lure them into a trap by asking them to submit letters of intent for the House candidates of their choice.
The GOP board a few days ago asked the Precinct 4 group led by Luis Q. Kapileo to submit letters for intent of their candidates.
The party leadership also encouraged them to nominate new precinct club officers.
But the GOP board has already named nine leaders from Precinct 4 who are among those they are going to meet tomorrow for an orientation that will be followed by the election of precinct club officers.
Kapileo, who was elected Precinct 4 club chairman on Jan. 4, said they will insist on the selection of Sylvestre Iguel and Barbara Yamada as their House candidates.
The GOP leadership has said that the Jan. 4 meeting was invalid.
Kapileo said complying with the GOP board’s “request” may indicate that his group has also agreed to disregard the results of their Jan. 4 meeting.
In a letter on Tuesday, he told GOP secretary Kimo Rosario that their letters of intent have already been submitted to former Precinct 4 chairman Benigno Sablan.
He suggested that Rosario obtain the letters from Sablan.
Kapileo said they will not dignify the party leadership’s refusal to recognize their Jan. 4 meeting.
“Maybe we are not so smart but we are not that stupid,” Kapileo said, vowing to defend the decision of the over 100 GOP members who elected them on Jan. 4.
Kapileo also criticized the GOP board’s way of re-organizing the precinct clubs, saying it is “divisive” and will not guarantee victory in the coming elections.
Choosing one leader for each village will not necessarily ensure victory, he said, because voters nowadays make decisions based on issues and not personal considerations.
