The Guam Power Authority was recently recognized for its utility
safety record by garnering third place honors in the American Public Power
Associations 2006 Safety Contest.
The APPA is a national organization of over 2,000 publicly or stated owned
electric utilities that promote the values of public ownership of its
electric utility services.
Of the 250 nationwide utilities that entered the APPAs 2006
Safety Contest, 78 were awarded for outstanding safety practices and GPA
was recognized in its category for its commitment to safe utility operations
to its customers and employees, said GPA general manager Joaquin
C. Flores.
This third place recognition is an exceptional honor given the competition
the authority faced.
Entrants were placed in categories according to their number of worker
hours and judged for the most incident-free records in 2006
The incident rate, used to judge contest entries, is based on the number
of work-related reportable injuries or illnesses and the number of worker
hours during 2006, as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Everybody in the authority should be congratulated, said Flores.
This record is indicative of high standards in the workplace that
is vital to safe and productive utility operations.
