DRIVERS beware!
An elite class of runners will take to the islands streets this
weekend.
On Sunday, March 25, veteran running enthusiasts participate in the Guam
Running Clubs 36th Annual Guam Marathon and Ekiden relay.
According to Mr. Marsh, GRC race director for the event the Guam Marathon
is, one of the oldest races in the Pacific. He added, Its
a small friendly race, and as with Marathons, its 26. 2 miles.
While the race is an intimate affair, Marsh says they allow no more than
250 participants to register annually. This year, theres going
to be about 35 runners. Its a small race and we like it that way.
Marsh stated that despite the small number of racers, runners come from
across the globe. Well have some off-island runners. There
will be several from the states, and we generally have some from Korea
and Japan, stated Marsh. He added, Last year we had a runner
from Poland.
The Assembly point is at the University of Guam Field House. Show time
is pegged at 3:30 a.m. and go time will be at 4a.m. Registration is closed;
however fans are welcomed to cheer the runners on at one of fourteen aid
stations or along the race route.
The GRC websites notes that the course will take participants along a
scenic path of Guams coastline. Runners will trek past historical
landmarks and points of interest from World War II.
The actual race route is as follows: the Point to point course starts
at the UOG Field House, down towards the Marine Lab, then a large marked
rectangular loop on the university campus before running down towards
Rt. 10 and exiting left on Rt. 10. Runners then head south towards the
Chalan Pago intersection and right onto Rt. 4 to Hagatna. In Hagatna,
runners run straight through to Paseo, around counter-clockwise, past
Fishermens Co-op and onto Marine Dr. On Marine Drive racers head
down towards Cabras power pland and head into the Port Authority of Guam
to Hotel Wharf where they will u turn and exit the PAG and back onto Marine
Dr. right and South to Big Navy.
