President Remengesau
left for Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Island during the weekend to
attend the 7th Western Micronesian Chief Executives' Summit.
The summit begun yesterday and President Remengesau is expected to return
to Palau on March 22 to give him time to attend the late Senate President
Johnny Reklais state funeral on March 23.
The summit will gather the four leaders of Guam, CNMI, the State of Yap
within the Federated States of Micronesia, and thePalau to discuss various
issues affecting the region.
Leaders attending the summit are expected to come up with regional initiatives
to several environment protection issues and tourism programs.
President Remengesau will bring up Palaus Micronesian Challenge
which has been supported by the leaders of the region.
The summit will reaffirm commitments of each participating nation to establish
close ties, expand future discussions and agree on beneficial initiatives
affecting the entire Western Micronesian Region.
For the chief executives summit, the agenda comprises discussion on the
invasive species, renewable energy, workforce investment, transportation,
health and tourism.
A joint communiqué is also expected to be signed at the closing
of the summit detailing the deliberations.
Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Insular Affairs David B.
Cohen will also be attending the summit.
