Horizon news Staff

Report submitted by the Palau Basketball Federation to the organizing committee of the just-concluded 2007 Education Awareness Week said that basketball became a prominent sport in the weeklong event.
All games were played at the Palau National Gymnasium with the largest participation in all the team sports as the PBF said that all the schools entered teams.
Two other team sports, volleyball and softball, were played. Track and field was also a major part of the activity.
However, results as well as analysis of the conduct of the other three events were not yet available as of presstime.
The PBF noted that 20 elementary school boys and girls teams and seven high school boys and girls teams participated after four days of the program. But due to the limited days, a total of 26 games were played.
The PBF said that trophies were awarded to the top three finishers.
The elementary schools were divided into three divisions based on school populations.
Division III schools had five teams that made up of boys and girls. Division II schools had four boys and three girls teams. Division I schools had four boys and four girls teams. They played a single elimination format in each division and gender.
There were four boys and three girls teams participated in the high school division.
Despite some minor problems faced like lack of communication between the PNOC and MOE to better facilitate all the sports programs, the PBF reported that the conduct of the games was generally successful.
The PBF said that these challenges were handled with great effort and respect among those who were involved including the organizers, volunteers, coaches, players and fans.
The PBF also thanked Alex Kaluu and Sara Sugiyama from the Ministry of Education for a job well done.
PHS Blue emerged champion in boys basketball by beating PHS Red, 49-39, in the championship game while BMS won over PMA, 33-24, for third place.

In the Girls side, Meyuns scored a 37-32 win over second placer SDA while Koror outplayed GBH, 42-14 for third.
