KAGMAN Elementary School yesterday concluded a busy week of promoting science awareness among its students through a science fair as well as theme and drawing competitions.
This year marks the school’s 4th annual science fair which saw the participation of nearly 700 students from kindergarten to fifth grade.
There were 40 entries in the fair and winning teams were chosen from each grade level.
Three entries were adjudged winners in the theme and drawing contests.
According to Nelly Sablan, the school’s science coordinator, the students’ work was graded based on overall presentation, creativity, originality and overall concept.
The students who were awarded medals and ribbons for winning the drawing competition were April Jean Cabrera and Katelynn Delos Reyes, 1st; Emmalou Cabrera, 2nd; and Gregory Manuel Sablan, 3rd.
In the theme contest, the winners were first grader Frances Santos whose entry “Science leads us to a journey beyond imagination and discovers reality,” became the overall theme of the competition.
Placing second in the theme contest was Katelynn delos Reyes, while Gregory Manuel Sablan Jr finished 3rd.
The entries in the science fair included how to avoid being shocked, meal for mold, making a geyser, volcano eruption, mixing colors, tin can telephone, gases and volume, water pollution, coin battery and a propeller-driven boat.
“The fair keeps improving every year. We have lots of analytical projects this year and it helps our students to develop their creativity and resourcefulness…not only in science but all content areas,” Sablan said.
Those who served as judges in yesterday’s competition were Jonathan Arriola of the Division of Environmental Quality, Chailang Palacios of Public Health, Joseph San Nicolas of Chacha Oceanview Jr. High, and Monica Pangelinan, William S. Reyes Elementary School’s science coordinator.
