THE championship match in the 45-and-up division of the 2006-2007 Masters Basketball League will be played tonight with pennant champion PTI Tropical Storm facing Proa/Security Title, Inc. in a winner-take-all game at 8:30 p.m.
The 45-and-up finals was originally set for Monday, but was moved in an earlier date after organizers finalized the schedule with representatives of both teams.
The Storm finished the regular season with a 5-1 record tying Proa and LBT, but grabbed the pennant after getting the most points in the tiebreak.
It gained an automatic semis slot and moved into the championship match after beating Top 45, 73-64, last Monday.
Leading the Storm’s title bid are Richard Brostrom, Nomer and Noel Gamboa, Manny Sitchon, Jack Palacios and player-coach Tony Sablan.
Brostrom scored 30 points in the Storms semis win over Top 45, while Sablan and Nomer Gamboa chipped in 17 and 16 markers, respectively.
Proa had to win two games in the playoffs to advance to the finals. It first downed the Dino Sores, 68-50, on March 9, and gained the first finals berth on March 14 after tripping LBT, 91-84.
In the 35-and-up division, the PTI Yankees hope to end the finals tonight when they meet Samahang Ilokano at Pangasinense at 7 p.m.
The Yankees have a twice-to-beat advantage in the finals, as they were undefeated in the playoffs.
The Yankees, which placed second in the regular season, beat the Old’Aces in their first playoff game and advanced to the finals after slipping past SIP, 79-76.
SIP had to thwart the Old’Aces last Monday, 90-79, to earn the second finals ticket.
Leading SIP are Ronald Delos Reyes, Tony Diaz, Melvin Villarin, brothers Rick and Tom Alegre, Richard Pambid and William Opone.
The Yankees will lean on Ed Palma, who hit a crucial triple in their win against SIP, Edsel Mendoza, Bruce Berline, George Poquiz, Warren Villegas, Jeff Warfield and Brostrom.
If SIP wins, there will be a deciding Game 2 on Monday.
