NMI student on dean’s list at NYU

A FORMER commonwealth youth senator has been included on the New York University dean’s list for her academic achievements.
Fred Schwarzbach, New York University associate dean, told Roselle D. Calvo in a letter, “You should feel justly proud of your achievement in having been awarded this important achievement.”
Schwarzbach said “academic success is built upon talent, ambition, dedication, and a great deal of hard work.”
Calvo, in an e-mail to Variety, said being away from home has its challenges.
“Every semester has its challenges. The last one brought homesickness and the current one a greater workload. Nonetheless, I have managed to overcome such challenges through God’s assistance,” she said, adding that whenever she’s stressed, she prays for peace of mind.
“Whenever I am bombarded with load of work, I ask for help in focusing and accomplishing whatever tasks are required of me,” she said, adding that she cannot take all the credit for her honor.
She said she thanks her alma mater, Marianas Baptist Academy, for the education she received from the institution.
“The training and preparation I received at MBA gave me the confidence in academia that I needed as an incoming student at a prestigious and competitive university like NYU. To be honest, I was afraid of the city, but not so much of the work or the workload because of the preparation that I received during my junior high and high school years at the school,” she said.
Calvo said that as an aspiring investment banker, it’s only natural that she view her situation as an educational investment.
“The investors who chose to invest their funds in my education are my parents, the commonwealth and NYU. So in order for me to keep them in my corner, I have to keep my value up. Keeping my value up and giving these investors their money’s worth demands that I study hard and give them a good return semester to semester,” she added.
Calvo said the “accomplishment is not an individual award but the product of a team effort.”
She added, “My take on college from the beginning has always been that I would commit myself to studying whenever school was in session and that I would save the partying and relaxing for breaks like winter break, spring break and summer time. As much I like to have fun, it’s important to remember that there are designated times for the two. Partying when it’s time to study will lead one to fail, while studying when it’s time to party will lead nowhere. Enjoy your college experience, but always remember to focus in school.”
