GPSS superintendent evaluation today

By Trina A. San Agustin

IT HAS been almost five months since the current Guam Education Policy Board voted to hire Guam Public School System Superintendent Luis Reyes.
Today at 6 p.m., Reyes will sit before the six voting members of GEPB to respond to the evaluation given to him earlier this month, according to GEPB vice chair Joe S. San Agustin.
Reyes will present his response during the executive meeting in the GPSS conference room. The public and media will not be allowed to sit in on this meeting.
The evaluation began earlier this month when all 13 members of the board discussed Reyes’s performance as a superintendent.
“By this week, the public will know how the board rates the superintendent’s job performance. Be it satisfactory or not, they will know,” San Agustin said.
When asked how he felt personally about Reyes’s performance as superintendent, San Agustin said: “I personally am not satisfied. I expected more from him.”
San Agustin said Reyes is beginning to move forward as a superintendent now, compared to when he first accepted the position back in November.
“He was hesitant to move forward at first because of the problems the previous superintendent and the previous board had. To me, he is not at the satisfactory mark,” San Agustin said.
The vice chair said he expected more from Reyest after four months in the position.
“He should do more with his staff. His staff needs to be more responsive to the needs of the superintendent,” San Agustin added.
He said the superintendent needs to be more careful in using funds from the government.
“There are still funds that he needs to manage until October. The pace hasn’t slowed down. Why does it have to come to the point where the board has to step in to assist in correcting the problems?” San Agustin said.
