AS the second oldest annual
marathon in the Pacific behind only the Maui Marathon by a year, the Guam
Marathon is a 26.2-mile trek beginning at the University of Guam field
house and ending at Agat Marina.
As the race was nearing its start in the quiet morning of the day, the
44 racers grew anxious at 4 a.m., the runners were off to face hours of
running until they reached the finish line at Agat Marina.
Runners come from all over the Pacific each year to participate in the
Marathon. However this year there was only one off island runner from
Japan.
Forty-three from Guam participated in the marathon that wound through
many scenic routes.
Many runners were spotted by cars on the road and were given words of
encouragement so they could finish the race.
As 7 a.m. people coming around could already see the first runner to finish
the race coming up the road. Rodney Bordallo took the first place honors
finishing with a time of 3 hours 4 minutes and 28 seconds.
Ten minutes after that Benjamin Waite appeared finishing in second with
a time of 3 hours 14 minutes and 3 seconds.
Shepherd DeBenedictis finished third with a time of 3 hours 18 minutes
and 23 seconds, followed by Larry Armamento (3:33:19), Kaz Matsushita
(3:40:42), Robert Navarro (3:40:59), Julio Dalangin (3:42:40), Akio Hoshi
(3:47:52), Fred Schumann (3:58:42) and Richard Van Dyke (4:01:07).
The Guam Running Club will be holding the 38th PIC Perimeter Relay on
April 28 at the United Seamens Club, in Piti.
