ELVIRA Manglona,
a Fall 2006 graduate of the University of Guam, will be recognized at
9 a.m. today for being a recipient of the 2007 Truman Scholar.
The Truman Scholarship Foun-dation awards scholarships to college students
to attend a graduate school in preparation for careers in government or
elsewhere in public service.
According to a release from UOG, Manglona, originally from Rota, is the
first Truman Scholar from the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
Manglona is among 70 people nationwide to receive the prestigious
award, and was selected on her leadership potential, intellectual
ability, and likelihood of making a difference, according
to the release.
She is a current graduate student of UOGs master degree program
in Public Administration.
Because she was selected as a Truman Scholar, she will get a $30,000 scholarship
for graduate study.
Scholars also receive priority admission and supplemental financial
aid at some premier graduate institutions, leadership training, career
and graduate school counseling, and special internship opportunities within
the federal government, UOG said.
Manglona is the seventh UOG student to receive the award in the last eight
years. UOG was named a Truman Scholar Honor Institution in 2004, joining
50 universities to receive the recognition.
The recognition ceremony will take place today at 9 a.m. in the School
of Business and Public Administration, Presidents Conference room
in Mangilao.
