Cougars roll over Stingers 10–1

IN Tuesday night’s Budweiser Baseball League action, the Guam Shipyard Cougars defeated the Palau Stingers 10-1 in nine innings. The game started off relatively slow with both teams going three up three down in the first inning. In the top of the second inning Cougars’ Rick Cruz reached on error and would then score on Jim Quintanilla’s RBI double.
The Stingers would fail to answer in the bottom of the second making the score 1 – 0 after one complete inning of play. In the top of the third the Cougars would ad another run when Felix Camacho singled to right to lead off the inning and would later score on an error.
The Cougars would keep adding runs in the top of the fourth when Rick Cruz would lead off the inning with a single to left. Two batters later Cougars first baseman John Rick Mendiola would single also single to left. And with two outs and runners on first and second cougars third baseman Joel Sablan would single to right field bringing in both Cruz and Mendiola. Neither team would score in the fifth which would bring the score to 4-0 after five innings of play.
In the top of the sixth inning the Cougars would add two more runs when with the bases loaded designated hitter Eloy Fujikawa would hit a two run single to center field.
Meanwhile Cougars’ starting pitcher Pete Castro would take a no hitter into the sixth inning where Stingers Ron Castro would beat out a throw from second to get an infield single with two outs.
Castro would be stranded on base to keep the Stingers from scoring making the score 6-0 after six complete innings of play. The Cougars would score another run in the top of the seventh on and RBI double by Rick Cruz and going into the bottom of the seventh with the score 7-0 the stingers would finally get on the board.
The Cougars brought in pitcher Jon Anderson in relief for the second and he would hit the first batter he faced who would later come around to score on a single to center by Stingers Vince Bamba.
