Taman wants certified translators

By Emmanuel T. Erediano
Variety News Staff

TO avoid differences in translations of official documents into Chamorro and Carolinian, Rep. Candido B. Taman has introduced a bill that requires translators to be certified.
Taman, R-Saipan, noted that anybody can do a translation which is “not necessarily consistent with the established Chamorro-Carolinian orthography and dictionary.”
He said he introduced House Bill 15-229 last month to establish an office within the Chamorro-Carolinian Language Policy Commission that will certify translators.
The bill requires translators to use the orthography and dictionary established by the commission.
The bill also wants to address the failure to implement language programs “due to lack of a quorum…and lack of interest and commitment among (the 12 commission members),” and the need for funding for the language programs.
