The Environmetal Quality Protection
Board disseminated several conservation tips in the observance of World
Water Day on March 22 with the team "Coping with Water Scarcity."
The EQPB noted that the Koror-Airai Water Treatment Plant purifies four
million gallons of water each day in order to provide residents with safe,
clean drinking water, which said is an expensive task, made more difficult
by the ever increasing demand by the public for more water.
The El Nino phenomenon is also expected to hit the country in the next
few weeks.
Palau relies mainly on rains to fill-up the dams to be converted into
as main source of water consumption.
The rains for over a week now continue to help the country in its conservation
effort following an earlier alarming condition of the water level at the
two dams that supply the states of Koror and Airai.
The EQPB has several tips such as turning off water while brushing teeth
and washing hands and save 12,000 gallons per year; fix drips to save
10,000 GPY; soak pans before washing them to save 10,000 GPY; wash only
full loads of laundry to save 5,000 GPY; use buckets of soapy water to
clean the car to save 20,000 GPY; and use compost around plants, tress
and shrubs to save 10,000 GPY.
In following these tips, the EQPB believes that "together we can
save millions of gallons of Palaus water everyday."
Thus, "we must take on the responsibility of water conservation now
in order to save money on your home water bill, prevent water shortages,
protect the quality of life of future generations, avoid government spending
required to increase capacity at the water plant and save public precious
tax money on water treatment.
The EQPB says that a few small changes in your water use habits can make
a huge difference in water savings. .
