Conserve Water

By Bernadette H. Carreon
Horizon news staff

WE can all help in conserving water. It has been raining for the past weeks but this should not stop us from helping one another in conserving the precious water with the onslaught of El Nino.
Rains might be falling but we should not be complacent to let our taps running. The smallest things we do to conserve water will go a long way.
The Environmental Quality Protection Board has come out with water conservation tips in observance of the World Water Day last March 22 but with fear of water scarcity come El Nino time, we should follow these tips everytime.
The tips said when brushing our teeth, we should turn off the tap and not let the water running. We fix leaks and wash only full loads of laundry.
This conservation tips may be small but it can help the future generation cope with expected water scarcity as population expands.
We should start thinking globally and not only prepare because we expect "drier" times.
Conservation efforts in our own backyard will contribute to the global effort to save water.
When we use water wisely we help the environment, we can also save money not only on water treatment but it could help reduce utility bills.
Palau mainly relies on rainwater for water supply, with the dry weather ahead, water level sources at the Ngerimel Dam and Ngerikiil is at its critical level.
The EQRB said that the Koror-Airai Water treatment plant treats four million galloons of water each day so we could have a safe and clean drinking water.
Water like power is very precious, let us not wait for the time we had to resort to water rationing to keep up with the water demands.
We change the way we utilize water now before it is too late. Cliché may be but prevention is better than resolving a problem.

Farewell to a great man

WE bid farewell to a great man, for the first time a state funeral was held at the capitol to pay tribute to a good man who not only gained accolades as a politicians but also contributed to the economic growth of Palau with his business acumen.
Senate President Johnny Reklai was very instrumental in getting this newspaper off the ground. He was a business partner, a mentor and an adviser for many years.
Reklai was finally laid to rest last Friday in a ceremony fit for someone who has always showed generosity and humility despite his successes.
Described as someone who is always calm and collected and is always willing to reach out to solve problems, Reklai had inspired many.
The outpouring of grief showed by the nation during the state funeral showed how people had loved him and would continue to love him, his legacy will linger long after his remains are buried.
