EXACTLY two month after holding
the election, the Association of Commonwealth Teachers has finally announced
the results.
San Vicente Elementary School sixth grade teacher Betty Miller won the
presidency, defeating Hopwood Junior Highs Pastor Gagaring and Kagman
Elementary Schools Sam Joyner.
Miller will replace Marianas High Schools James Yangetmai, who assumed
the presidency in August.
Gagaring, who was allowed to run for president and vice president, won
the second top post.
Gagaring defeated Lauralynn Sweet of Kagman Elementary School for the
vice presidency.
Elected secretary and treasurer were Carmen Ada of Hopwood Junior High
School and Ellen Rayphand of San Vicente Elementary School.
Their opponents were Roger Church of Kagman Elementary and Thomas Ermang
of MHS.
We received the votes of over 60 percent of the total teachers for
the three islands and were happy that all were well represented
in this election, said Angela Wheat, ACT election committee chairwoman.
Wheat said upon completion of the tabulation process on Thursday, the
winning candidates were immediately informed of the results.
Yesterday, ACT officials met with them at San Vicente Elementary School
to discuss the formal installation.
The election in February was urged by some ACT members who said they were
not represented in the August election.
San Vicentes Jaime Vergara was elected vice president, Hopwoods
Christine Halloran, secretary; and Cristine Yohanan, treasurer.
The announcement of the Feb. 28 election results was delayed due to concerns
about election rules and a lack of cooperation among members.
