The United Nations Inter-Agency Fact-Finding Mission to Fiji has concluded
its consultations in the coup prone South Pacific nation
The U.N. mission was dispatched in response to the Security Councils
call for a peaceful resolution to the situation in the island nation and
the restoration of democracy in Fiji.
The mission headed by Jehangir Khan of the U.N. Department of Political
Affairs comprising political, electoral, human rights and development
experts to Fiji in the wake of the Dec. 5 military coup.
With the objective of gathering a first-hand view on the situation
in Fiji, the mission conducted wide range of discussions, on elections,
human rights, the rule of law and related issues pertaining to the restoration
of democracy, peace and stability, the U.N. mission said.
The mission will submit its confidential recommendations to U.N. Secretary
General Ban ki Moon in New York. The report will not be made public.
The report will form the basis of continued consultations between
the United Nations and Fiji as well as the international diplomatic community,
including the Pacific Islands Forum, the Commonwealth, the European Union
and regional countries, the mission said.
The mission expressed its sincere gratitude to all its Fijian interlocutors
including the interim administration, the former government, political
parties, civil society organizations, human rights bodies, the judiciary,
non-government organizations, religious organization, womens groups
as well as the business community, trade unions and other concerned Fijian
citizens who shared their views and information in a free and open manner.
The mission also expressed its appreciation to representatives of the
Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, the European Union and the international
diplomatic community with whom it held consultations.
