TWO more pairs
were crowned champions in the 2007 Traders Insurance/PTI Cup badminton
tournament last Sunday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gym.
Alvin Alvarez and Eric Peña ruled the Mens B doubles after
slipping past Emil De Belen and Robert Reyes in three sets.
The duo of Alvarez and Pena took the first set 21-16, but failed to sweep
the title match after De Belen and Reyes recovered in the second set,
21-19. Alvarez and Peña finally claimed the championship with a
21-13 win in the deciding third set.
De Belen and Reyes were undefeated in the elimination round before bowing
to Alvarez and Pena in the finals.
Loida Ito and Cristy Villaflor swept all their games to top the Womens
A/B division. They had a 3-0 slate in the elimination and capped the division
with a 24-21, 21-16 triumph over Diane Dar Juan and Shirley Kim in the
finals.
Placing third were Jinky De Belen and Janis Parcon, who downed Da Juan
and Kim in the consolation match, 22-20, 21-15.
With their finals victories, the pair of Alvarez and Peña and the
duo of Ito and Villaflor will join the champions circle, which included
Macoi Aguda and Raj Jayalal (Mens A), Narlou Achas and Ariel Mariano
(Mens C), Deborah Fisher and Camille Samonte (Womens C) and
Fisher and Milo Valdez (Mixed C).
Action in the season-opening tournament of the Northern Marianas Badminton
Federaiton will resume this weekend with competitions in the Mixed A/B
elimination round.
