Apatang still waiting for word from GOP Precinct 1 club

By Emmanuel T. Erediano
Variety News Staff

THE perennial top-vote getter in Precinct 1 has yet to be informed by the Republican Party club whether he will be included on the GOP slate.
Former Rep. Dave M. Apatang said he submitted his letter of intent the day before the deadline on Friday last week.
But he said no one in the party seems willing to tell him “what’s going on.”
“I’m still here waiting and I want to see what’s going to come up — I really don’t know anything yet,” Apatang said in a telephone interview yesterday.
Some party officials, who declined to be identified, said they fear another GOP split if Apatang is not among the party’s six House candidates of the vote-rich Precinct 1.
“He wins there every time — he’s always been no. 1 there, so how can they explain why he wasn’t nominated?” a Republican supporter said.
Nine individuals submitted letters of intent to the party’s Precinct 1 club, Variety learned.
The list of candidates is set to be finalized this week by the precinct club leaders.
The party will not disclose the names of the candidates until the GOP board of directors endorses their nominations.
The GOP board is set to hold a meeting tonight
