Students participate in environmental expo

OVER a hundred students from elementary and high schools yesterday learned more about the environment during an event organized by the Division of Environmental Quality as part of Environmental Awareness Month.
The environmental expo was a success according to DEQ spokeswoman Reina Camacho who said the participants enjoyed this year’s venue — the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library in Susupe.
Last year’s environmental expo was held at the Chamolinian Pavilion in Garapan.
The schools that participated were Oleai, Saipan Southern, Marianas High, Grace Christian Academy and Mount Carmel School.
Camacho said the students also got the chance to win prizes by visiting booths where they brought “passports to the environment.” The expo’s objective, she said, is to provide hands-on lessons for the students to learn ways to protect the environment.
The private firms that presented environment-friendly products and services were Ace Hardware, Microl Corp., No Ka Oi Termite and Pest Control, Hotel Nikko Saipan, the Marianas Variety and Allied Pacific Environmental Consulting.
The government agencies that participated were Coastal Resources Management, the Bureau of Environmental Health, the Commonwealth Utilities Corp., the Department of Cultural and Community Affairs, the Saipan Mayor’s Office, the Division of Fish and Wildlife, the Emergency Management Office, the Department of Public Safety and the Department of Public Works.
