OVER a hundred students from
elementary and high schools yesterday learned more about the environment
during an event organized by the Division of Environmental Quality as
part of Environmental Awareness Month.
The environmental expo was a success according to DEQ spokeswoman Reina
Camacho who said the participants enjoyed this years venue
the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library in Susupe.
Last years environmental expo was held at the Chamolinian Pavilion
in Garapan.
The schools that participated were Oleai, Saipan Southern, Marianas High,
Grace Christian Academy and Mount Carmel School.
Camacho said the students also got the chance to win prizes by visiting
booths where they brought passports to the environment. The
expos objective, she said, is to provide hands-on lessons for the
students to learn ways to protect the environment.
The private firms that presented environment-friendly products and services
were Ace Hardware, Microl Corp., No Ka Oi Termite and Pest Control, Hotel
Nikko Saipan, the Marianas Variety and Allied Pacific Environmental Consulting.
The government agencies that participated were Coastal Resources Management,
the Bureau of Environmental Health, the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.,
the Department of Cultural and Community Affairs, the Saipan Mayors
Office, the Division of Fish and Wildlife, the Emergency Management Office,
the Department of Public Safety and the Department of Public Works.
