THE Southern Sonics and G-Stars posted close wins, while the Garapan Rollers easily downed their foes in the SAIPANCELL/BANMI 25-and-under Basketball League over the weekend at the Gilbert C. Ada Gym.
The Sonics survived the Cyclones fourth-quarter rally to pull off a 93-90 victory last Saturday, while the G-Stars slipped past the Cholos, 93-88.
The Sonics were ahead by 11 points at the end of the third period, 74-63, when the Cyclones worked their way back into the game with their 3-point shooting.
The Cyclones had four triples in the fourth period, but the Sonics still secured the win after getting timely baskets from Jon Lim, Manuel Ajoste, Jason Bahillo and Lerio Pagarao.
Lim topscored for the Sonics with 21 points keeping their team’s record perfect at 3-0.
Ajoste added 14, Pagarao chipped in 12 points and Bahillo and Brian Flores contributed 10 markers apiece.
Tyrone Palacios led the Cyclones, who absorbed their first loss in three games, with 18 points.
The G-Rollers recovered from their debut loss to the G-Stars with a big 109-85 triumph over Ghasias.
Manny Matagolai’s guns were blazing, as he drilled 32 points.
The game was still close in the first half with the G-Rollers up by only seven, 53-46, when Matagolai and Ivan De Vero sparked the G-Rollers’ breakaway in the second half.
Matagolai and De Vero combined for 17 points in the third period, as the G-Rollers outgunned Ghasias, 27-10, to enter the fourth quarter with an 80-56 lead.
It was cruise control for the G-Rollers from thereon.
In last Friday’s third game, the G-Stars improved to a 2-1 record after a five-point win over the Cholos.
The G-Stars drew big games from Steven Tenorio and Jose Tumaquip, who both waxed hot from downtown and drilled 30 and 27 points, respectively.
Tenorio had five triples, while Tumaquip hit three from downtown.
