LUTA and the Department of Public Works/Procurement & Supply cruised to easy wins in the 2007 Inter-government Basketball League last Tuesday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gym.
Luta clobbered the Department of Corrections, 103-60, while DPW/P&S pounded the Ports Police, 85-62.
Luta had five players scoring in double figures for a 43-point win, its third in four games putting the team in third place in Pool A behind the league-leading NMC Proa (4-0) and defending champion Tinian (3-0).
Elias Saralu led Luta’s balanced offense hitting 18 points.
His two triples in the first minute of the game sparked a Luta hot start giving his team a 29-13 lead at the end of the first period.
Aside from a well-run offense, Luta also played tough defense limiting Corrections to 10 points in the second quarter to take a 49-23 halftime lead.
Luta never looked back from thereon with Nate Barcinas, Jake Celes, Tom Diaz and Dexter Mendiola contributing on offense.
Celes chipped in 15, Barcinas and Mendiola had 12 markers apiece and Diaz added 11.
Jeff Quitugua topscored for Corrections with 26 points, but his team is still winless in four games.
The only other Corrections player to score in double figures was Greg Blas, who nailed 11.
In the second game, DPW/P&S notched its third win in a row after getting another big game from Oscar Masga, who hit 22 points.
DPW/P&S controlled the game in the second quarter en route to improving its record to 3-1.
The Ports Police were still leading at the end of the first quarter, 23-21, when DPW/P&S outscored them in the second period, 23-10, to grab the lead, 44-33.
Masga, who had 10 points in the first half, matched his output in the first 20 minutes of the game in the third period to give DPW/P&S a 66-43 advantage, entering the final canto.
For the second straight time, the Ports Police were held to 10 points in a quarter in the third canto and they failed to make any headway in the final period absorbing their third loss in four games.
John Guerrero and Eric Atalig provided support to Masga adding 17 and 14 points, respectively.
