NMC Proa outguns Firedawgs; Enforcers enter win column

By Roselyn B. Monroyo
Variety News Staff

NMC Proa kept its unbeaten record in the 2007 Inter-government Basketball League after surviving the Airport Police Firefighters, 93-86, while the DPS Enforcers broke into the win column after last Wednesday’s games at the Gilbert C. Ada Gym.
The win was Proa’s fifth in as many matches, as its balanced offense withstood Jawn Joyner and Jerome Reyes’ 30-point performances.
Reyes scored 34 points, while Joyner had 30 to spark the Firedawgs’ rally in the fourth quarter.
But Proa drew double figures from five players to foil ARFF’s comeback bid.
Tony Diaz was in his usual explosive form hitting 24 points. He scored six of Proa’s last 10 points to secure the win.
Stoney Villagomez had 18 markers, Kelvin Fitial chipped in 17 and Mel Manibusan and Kevin Castro added 14 and 12, respectively.
With Villagomez drilling two early triples and Manalili and Castro hitting one trey each, Proa took a 29-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Proa kept the driver’s seat at halftime, 54-44, with Diaz exploding for 14 points in the second quarter.
Diaz, Villagomez, Fitial and Manibusan joined forces in the third quarter to increase Proa’s lead to 16, 79-63, entering the fourth.
Joyner and Reyes tried to bring the Firedawgs back into the game, as they combined for 17 points in the fourth period. But crucial baskets from Manibusan and Diaz saved the day for Proa. Manibusan had eight points in the final canto.
With the loss, the Firedawgs dropped to a 2-3 record , while the victory put NMC Proa in the lead in Pool A, two wins ahead of defending champion Tinian (3-0) and Luta (3-1).
In the first game, the DPS Enforcers gained their first win in five games after downing the Legislature, 63-56.
Roy Kaipat paced the Enforcers scoring 21 points, while Dan Punimata added 13.
The Enforcers controlled the game from start to finish not allowing the Lawmakers to score more than 14 points in the first three quarters.
Asterio Tawanpiy led the Lawmakers’ losing cause firing 12 point, but his team is still winless in five games.
