Agat suffers from water woes

By Gerardo R. Partido
Variety News Staff

IT WASN’T a very good weekend for Agat residents as the southern village suffered from a water outage for two days in a row.
According to the Guam Waterworks Authority, a water main break affected the whole village starting on Saturday when a 12-inch water line broke on Erskin Drive, causing water to be out in the village for eight hours.
This break was restored by 6 p.m. Saturday evening but the following day, a main line broke again, causing water to be out in most of the village.
GWA crews worked around the clock to resolve the problem. Water was restored by yesterday afternoon.
However, the village’s water woes are not yet over as the Navy will again be shutting down its Fena water treatment plant in a few days.
This may again result in little to no water pressure in Agat and other southern villages.
According to GWA, the Navy shutdown is expected to last through the morning of May 13.
The Navy is planning on a 30-hour shutdown as its crews continue to work on the final phases of the Fena Treatment Plant upgrades.
For the May 11-13 shutdown, the following villages will be affected: Agat, Santa Rita, Piti, Nimitz and Nimitz Hill.
GWA said it will work to stock up water in its village tanks to keep water flowing through the southern areas.
Mobile water tankers will likewise be placed in the villages during the scheduled Navy repair.
