By Kyle Terwilliger
Variety News Staff

FRESHMAN D’Andre Weaver took his third straight high jump victory on Friday in the IIAAG Track & Field events. Weaver, a five foot nine inch freshman at Guam High School is only in his second year competing in Track & Field, with this being his first at the high school level. Weaver was pushed to the highest mark cleared this year as he leaped over the five foot six inch mark.
Simon Sanchez’s Jericho Uy would push Weaver as Uy was the first to clear the five foot five inch mark putting the pressure on the freshman. Uy who is a junior at Simon Sanchez is competing for the first time ever in Track & Field. After D’Andre Weaver cleared the five foot six inch mark he would then attempt to clear the five foot eight inch mark and would come extremely close showing just how much promise this young athlete has.
The two would comment about becoming teammates on the upcoming All-Island team that they are sure to make through the High Jump event. Weaver would say, “Nothing changes we’ll practice the same way.” Uy would follow saying, “we’ll have to work on our other events as well so we can help the team.” When asked about their mindset going into uncharted territory for both Uy would say, “Just do it.” Weaver would chuckle at Uy’s response and would follow with, “We just need to work hard and try our best, and we just have to do what we normally do.” With Weaver and Uy clearing the five foot five mark that is the highest this year. And with Weaver only a freshman and getting so close to the five foot eight mark on Friday he is sure to make a run at Guam’s High Jump record at six feet one and three quarter inches. Despite their efforts in the High Jump both Simon Sanchez and Guam High would fall to 1-3 on the season. Both the Boys and Girls teams for John F.
Kennedy and George Washington would improve their undefeated records to 4-0. The Boys JFK team was led by wins in the 1500 Meter Run, 3000 Meter Run, and the 110 Meter Hurdles as they beat Southern High School 122-0.
The Geckos Boys teams would be led by wins in the 400 Meter Dash, 300 Meter Hurdles, 4x400 Meter Relay, Triple Jump, and the Javelin Throw as they defeated the Guam High Panthers 95-31.
The Girls Islanders team was led by wins in the 1500 Meter Run, 100 Meter Hurdles, 4x100 Meter Relay, Long Jump, Triple Jump, and the Javelin Throw as they defeated Southern High School 127-0.
The Gecko Girls were led in wins in the 400 Meter Dash, 800 Meter R un, 3000 Meter Run, 300 Meter Hurdles, and Shot Put as they defeated Guam High 100-20.
