SMITH’s Sonic Booms and the Grand Mean Striking Machines blanked separate opponents in the Spring 2007 NMIFA Women’s Recreational League last Saturday at the Airport Field.
The Sonic Booms played in the first game and shut out Pacific Island Club’s Pretty Incredible Chicks, 2-0.
It was the Sonic Booms third straight win and first against the Incredible Chicks, as their initial meeting during the league opener ended in a draw, 3-all.
With the win, the Sonic Booms strengthened their hold on the No. 1 spot collecting 10 points.
Madison Smith and Brenda Schultz scored one unassisted goals apiece to keep the Sonic Booms in the lead.
Smith made the first goal of the game in the 12th minute when she chased the ball on the right baseline and kicked it.
PIC goalie Temary Gramlich dove for the ball near the goal post, but was a few second late giving the Sonic Booms’ a 1-0 lead.
Schultz scored the second goal in the second half.
With the loss, the Incredible Chicks still have five points for second place in the team standings.
Dale Roberts was the referee in the first game, while John Ravell and Dean Tenorio were the linesmen.
In the second match, the Grand Mean Striking Machines gained their first win with a similar 2-0 shut out triumph against Fiesta Fuerza.
The Striking Machines scored both goals in the first half with Becca Newman nailing an unassisted goal in the 12th minute.
A little more than two minutes after Newman’s goal, team captain Morgan Rose hit a corner kick for the second goal in the game.
Glenn Smith was the referee in the second game, while Rob Schultz and Ravell were the linesmen.
With the win, the Striking Machines now have four points moving them up from fourth to third place. Fiesta is at the bottom of the team standings having lost three times and fought to a draw in two games.
This Saturday’s game will also be played at the Airport Field, as the Oleai Sports Complex Field will be used for an athletics meet. The succeeding games will be played at the Oleai Field.
Two more regular games will be played before the league starts the playoffs.
This Saturday, the Striking Machines will take on the Sonic Booms in the first game, while Fiesta Fuerza will face the Incredible Chicks.
The last regular season game on May 19 will feature Fiesta Fuerza vs Sonic Booms in the first match and the Striking Machines against PIC in the second game.
In the semis on May 26, the top team will fight the No. 4 squad for the first finals berth, while the No. 2 and 3 teams square off for the second finals ticket.
The championship match is set for May 28 at the Oleai Field.
