A FORMER Guam senator assumed her duties yesterday as Northern Marianas College’s new president.
Dr. Carmen Fernandez was on the As Terlaje campus where she met with employees and some of the students.
“I officially start today my term as president of NMC,” she said in an interview. “It was a very productive first day as I started the morning by meeting the management team, employees and students.”
Fernandez also attended her first cabinet meeting at the administration building on Capital Hill.
“I also went over to the governor’s office where I got the chance to meet cabinet officials including Education Commissioner David Borja and the governor’s special adviser on education, Dan Nielsen,” she said.
According to Fernandez, “We agreed to work together and I was able to get a confirmation on the grant for adult basic education for continued funding of over $200,000.”
Fernandez said she will make a courtesy visit to the Legislature today.
During a meeting with Finance Secretary Eloy Inos, Fernandez said she got a commitment on funding for NMC administrative positions.
“These positions are an accreditation concern and I was happy to get the finance secretary’s commitment that NMC will be provided needed funding for these positions,” she said.
Fernandez described her first day as a “wonderful experience.”
“I am so honored and today was a wonderful experience. Everyone was really supportive of NMC,” she said.
