The seven Indonesian
seamen who were brought in for questioning involving the alleged killing
of their Taiwanese captain was deported to Taiwan to face criminal prosecution.
Vice President and Justice Minister Elias Camsek Chin said the vessels
crewmembers were sent back to Taiwan on Tuesday.
Attorney General Jeffrey Beattie said the visas of the suspects were revoked
by President Remengesau because the seamens presence was not "
in the best interest of Palau."
Beattie explained that the president has authority to revoke a foreigners
visa if deemed necessary.
He said that although the vessel was authorized to fish within Palau Exclusive
Economic Zone (EEZ) , Palau has no criminal jurisdiction over the case
because the crime reportedly occurred at a Taiwanese vessel and that the
victim is a Taiwanese national.
He said that there was a request from the Taiwan embassy here to repatriate
the seamen to answer to criminal charges.
Earlier Palau law enforcement officials detained for questioning the seven
seamen who were believed to have been involved in the alleged murder of
skipper Tsai Yun-sheng.
The vessel was reportedly on a fishing trip to Palau when the incident
occurred.
Initial reports said that the captain was killed on board and his body
thrown into the sea.
Beattie said Palau also do not have the jurisdiction to probe the case
and only assisted in helping find the captains body.
Tsais father flew in to Palau in an attempt to find his sons
body , he went back to Taiwan yesterday.
According to an article from China Post, Tsai could have encountered a
mutiny by the Indonesian workers after one of them was disciplined by
him.
