HONIARA (Pacnews)
A member of Solomon Islands Parliament is calling on the countrys
Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare to resign so that the Julian Moti issue
can be resolved.
The MP for East Are and chairman of the Bills and Legislation Parliamentary
Committee, Edward Huniehu, said Sogavares continued defense of Moti
and the announcement that he will now be appointed attorney general defies
all logic of good governance and rational decision making at the highest
political level.
He said it will be a disgrace to see Moti who is wanted for trial for
juvenile sex charges in his country of adoption becoming the next AG of
Solomon Islands.
Huniehu said the Moti saga has resulted in a number of embarrassing experiences
which have eroded the reputation of Solomon Islands among its development
partners.
He urged the legal fraternity association and the civil society to condemn
the prime ministers decision.
Huniehu also called on cabinet members and public servants opposed to
the appointment of Moti to resign in protest against such actions.
In other news, Solomon Islands Home Affairs Minister Bernard Giro has
revoked the order made on April 3 declaring Western and Choiseul provinces
disaster areas.
The National Disaster Management office said the emergency relief phase
is now over and the next phase will concentrate on recovery to areas affected
by the deadly tsunami.
