THE inaugural Loyola Sports Tennis Tournament concluded last Saturday at the Fiesta Resort & Spa tennis courts with Lydia Tan getting the women’s Open tiara.
Tan and Melanie Daly battled neck-and-neck in the first five games, before the former swept the last three games to win the match, 8-5.
The two finalists traded serves and volleys forcing a 5-all tie. But Tan started pulling away in the sixth game after attacking the net.
In the battle for third, Sakiko Eda downed Darlene Bareet, 8-6.
The top three placers received trophies for their feat.
The Loyola netfest, which also featured 9-and-under and 10-and-above competitions, was organized by Fiesta tennis instructor Peter Loyola.
Luther Lizama topped the 9-and-under division, while Evzen Pabellon and Tomo Hatamata finished second and third, respectively.
Lica Ishida ruled the 10-and-up division, while Francesca Lee placed second. The third place award went to Sky Iisuka.
The three division tournaments were participated in by students of Loyola, who was happy with the turnout for the inaugural netfest.
Interestingly, the women’s Open singles features players from different nations, according to Loyola.
Tan is from Malaysia, Daly is from Australia and Eda is from Japan. The two other participants, Stefanie Hart is from France, while Darlene Bareet is from Canada.
"By the end of 2007, maybe in the last week of November or the first week of December, we will hold another tournament," Loyola said.
"I am hoping for a bigger tournament through the help of future sponsors," he added.
