Eli Buenaventura and Roy Pangelinan won the mens 4.0 doubles championship
in the Guam International Tennis Open Championship on the Hilton Guam
Resort &Spa tennis courts last Sunday.
Buenaventura and Pangelinan stunned topseeds Benson Au-Eung and Peter
Lai, 7-5, 6-3, in the semifinals and downed second seeds Sam Lai and Alvon
Brown, 6-4, 6-2, in the championship match.
Buenaventura also competed in the mens 35+ singles and made it into
the semifinals.
The Northern Mariana Islands Tennis Association president retired in his
semis match over eventual champion Craig Tsuda in the second set.
Buenaventura won the opening set, 6-1, before retiring in the second set
with Tsuda leading, 5-4. Tsuda beat Brent Goodwin in the finals.
Other winners in the annual tournament were Michael Tan and April Flores
(3.0 singles), Bobby Cruz and Mimi Clinard (4.0 singles), Clinard/Margaret
Terry (womens 4.0 doubles), Patricia Ching/ Dan Tinsay (mixed 4.0
doubles);
Rosalie Cao Tapu (35+ singles), Torgun Smith/Craig Tsuda (35+mens
doubles), Leah Duenas/ Kayoko Sugahara (womens 35+ doubles) and
Kayoko Sugahara/ Torgun Smith (35+ mixed doubles).
