Old School secures second place

By Kyle Terwilliger
Variety News Staff

IT was a battle to secure second place last night at the 76 Circle K Masters Baseball League game and the Guahan Old School (6-1-1) pulled out all the tricks from their dugout as they made it happen beating Masters Baseball Academy aka MBA (4-2-1) 11-1 as umpire Bill Palomo called the game at the bottom of the fifth inning due to the 10 run mercy rule.
In the first match-up between the two teams they tied at nine a piece giving them a draw. This time the Old School made sure they would walk out of Paseo in the second spot. After last week’s loss to last place team the Guam Seniors, it was the new and improved defensive Old School team that showed up with big plays made by third baseman Glen Eliptico, second base man Mike Dungca and first baseman Joe Cabarles as they turned double plays in both the first and fifth innings.
Pitcher Roke Perez went the distance throwing only a total of 39 pitches with 17 of them being strikes. Guahan Old School looked sharp and treated the fans offensively with a homer to left field by catcher Ken Quintanilla. This homerun would seal the game for the Old School. Contributing offensively were Ruben Payumo, Mike Dungca, Warren Pelletier and Joe San Miguel scoring two runs a piece.
In the losing effort it was MBA shortstop Vince Carbullido who scored the only run. Roke Perez would be the winning pitcher, and the loss would be given to MBA’s pitcher Paul Carbullido. Don’t miss the next scheduled game on Monday May 14th, 7pm at the Paseo Stadium when the Guam Seniors take on the Masters Baseball Academy (MBA). And don’t forget to circle June 2nd through the 9th as the Guam Masters host the Masters tournament which will feature teams from Saipan, Palau, Australia, and of course our very own Guam Masters.
