President Remengesau has asked
Congress to confirm the appointment of seven individuals that will compose
the Congressional Reappointment Commission.
The member of the commission will be tasked in reapportioining and redistricting
the Senate electoral district and adjust the number of senators.
The president has appointed Masuo Kyota, Etibek Sadang, Emil Ramarui,
Haruo Esang, Masao Ueda, Celestine Yangilmau and Emmanuel Maldangesang
to the commission.
"I have selected these individuals based upon their qualifications
and their ability to serve the nation in this role. Further as required
by statute, these proposed members represent a broad section of our nation,
and they will bring their different perspectives to the reapportionment
debate," the president said in his letter to Senate President Surangel
Whipps.
Earlier senators numbered to 18 and then it was reduced to nine. The president
said nine senators are too small.
He said the commission is a critical service to the democracy and that
action should be taken immediately to the request because the commission
should complete their work by July 1.
