ACT to revise bylaws

By Moneth G. Deposa

THE new leadership of the Association of Commonwealth Teachers has two main goals — revising their bylaws and establishing a system-wide survey among teachers.
“Since there are only a few weeks left in this school year, we’ve agreed to set our sights on those two goals at this time,” said ACT’s newly elected president Betty Miller in an e-mail to Variety.
She said the survey will be analyzed over the summer to allow them to begin next school year with a clear focus as to what teachers would like the association to accomplish on their behalf.
Miller said to keep track of the association’s goals and mission, meetings have been scheduled for every Thursday of this month at San Vicente school, from 6 p.m. in room A6.
She said all interested members of the community are welcome and encouraged to attend or they may e-mail their questions and concerns to cnmiactnow@aol.com.
Asked about the school system’s financial condition, Miller said: “I am not in a position at this time to answer questions regarding the...funding problems in our schools. ... We are not prepared to release a public statement as to our official position on any matter until we have had the opportunity to receive input from our teachers. We will happily address any issue, if it is a need as indicated by our teacher surveys.”
Besides Miller, the new ACT officers are Pastor Gagaring, Carmen Ada and Ellen Rayphand.
