A MAN was sentenced
to 10 years imprisonment for the fatal stabbing of an Astumbo resident
on June 24, 2005.
Andrew Poenito Maysho, 30, from Chuuk, was arrested and charged on July
12, 2005.
The body of Aroy Roman was found in the parking lot of the Sigidiyas Court
in Astumbo Gardens, Dededo in June that year.
Maysho, who will be deported after serving his jail time, was ordered
by the court to send a letter of apology to the family of the victim and
pay the Roman family $3,134 in restitution.
Maysho was identified by some witnesses and was charged with murder, manslaughter
and aggravated assault with special allegation of possession and use of
a deadly weapon.
In a plea agreement, Maysho admitted stabbing Roman on the night of June
24, 2005 but maintained that he did it for self defense during a rumble
with several other male individuals.
He told police investigators that he pulled a knife from his back pocket
in order to scare the victim.
He stated that he saw Ramon attending a rosary on Sigidiyas Court in Astumbo
Gardens and approached him.
Maysho insisted that it was an accident and he used a downward striking
motion to stab the victim in the neck.
He said he threw the knife into the bushes and ran from the scene.
Maysho was earlier charged along with Christopher Maysho Aiken, 24, and
Mafnas Aiken, 18.
The charges against the Aikens were eventually filed separately. They
were charged with aggravated assault, assault, reckless conduct, and disorderly
conduct.
The younger Aiken admitted to police authorities that he had a prior confrontation
with the victim. He said Roman assaulted him and injured his face and
right eye.
