Taboo observed on death of Wallis king

MATA’UTU (Pacnews) — Chiefly clans on Wallis and Futuna have announced a six-month taboo on the highly sensitive appointment of a possible successor to the late King Tomasi Kulimoetoke ina the Pacific French Territory.
The late king, locally known as the “Lavelua” died on Monday at the age of 88. He was installed the chiefly title in 1959.
Speaking at the funeral of the late king, the “Kuli’tea” chiefly prime minister of the House of Wallis officially announced that public services will be closed until next week.
He said chiefly clans on the island will observe a six-month mourning period, during which it will be taboo to mention he highly sensitive topic of the Lavelua’s successor.
The local administration has also ordered flags to be flown at half-mast throughout the kingdom until next week.
“During those six months, the coronation of a new Lavelua will not be mentioned. It will only be considered after those six months,” the high chief said
