THE Guam Environmental
Protection Agencys Pesticide Enforcement Program has ordered the
recall of two illegal insecticides found being sold in five stores on
Guam.
The mosquito repellent products labeled Camping Essentials Mosquito
Sticks and Citronilla Incense were not registered with
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency therefore they are illegal,
said Guam EPA administrator Lorilee T. Crisostomo.
Guam EPA warned that unregistered pesticides are potentially dangerous
because of the level of uncertainty regarding their production and the
ingredients that they contain.
Registration and establishment numbers certify a pesticide has been
made in a permitted facility and guarantees the safety of a product when
used appropriately. We are very concerned with the use of illegal pesticides
due to the potential they have to harm our air, land and water,
Crisostomo said.
Inspectors traced the two recalled products back to China routed through
Canada, the U.S. mainland and finally to Guam.
The agency urged the community to report any discovery of similar products.
Guam EPA will continue to pull these products from the shelves if
they are found during the ongoing investigation, Guam EPA stated
in a press release.
