THE Pepsi Giants were looking for a three way tie for first place in the Budweiser Baseball Leagues finale on Friday, but were stopped short by the Guam Greyhounds. With the win the Guam Greyhounds take the season pennant with a final record of 10-2. The win would go to the Greyhounds pitcher Paul Pangelinan with the save going to Tony Yatar who came in the ninth to shut down the Giants.
The game would begin in a pitchers stalemate with both pitchers beginning the game with no hitters. Pepsi Giants’ pitcher Ernie Surber and Greyhounds’ Paul Pangelinan would both shut down the opposing hitters in the first two innings not allowing a single hit. Both pitchers would lose their no hitters in the third but both would get out of the inning without giving up a single run.
In the top of the fourth inning the Greyhounds would put their first run on the board off of Surber when Rico Castro began the inning with a double and would then come around to score on an RBI single to center field by Pete Guerrero. Pangelinan would keep up his dominance throughout the game not giving up a run until the eighth inning. The Greyhounds would however, score another two runs in the top of the fifth inning when after reaching on a fielder’s choice, Greyhounds’ short stop JT Tuquero scored on an RBI single by Rico Castro.
Joey Taijeron would then come around on a fielding error committed by Pepsi’s Ray Aguon to give the Giants a 3-0 lead after five complete innings. The score would be deadlocked at 3-0 for then next two innings. In the bottom of the eighth the Giants would show some life when center fielder Benji Pangelinan singled to lead off the inning and would then come around to score on a fielding error by Rico Castro in left field.
The Giants’ Ernie Surber would get the Greyhounds out consecutively in the top of the ninth to give the Giants a shot at a comeback in the bottom half of the inning. The Giants’ would indeed begin the inning strong. Pete Aguon would draw the lead off walk, followed by a single by Kurt Diaz. With runners on second and first with no outs the Greyhounds would lift pitcher Paul Pangelinan in favor of Tony Yatar. Yatar would then get Ray Aguon to ground into the 6-4-3 double play. With a runner on third and two outs Kieth Hattig would ground out to short stop to end the game.
Paul Pangelinan would get the win after pitching eight complete innings giving up only one unearned run on five hits and striking out three. Tony Yatar would get the save to give the Greyhounds the pennant. With the loss the Giants drop to a tie with the AK Islanders for third place. Tuesday will see the Giants take on the Islanders for playoff positioning. The loser of that game will take the fourth spot and will play the Greyhounds in the opening game of the playoffs on Thursday.
