No new cases of chicken pox, measles outbreak in Japan

The Bureau of Public Health said yesterday that there are no new cases of chicken pox but continued to warn the public about taking precaution against the disease.
Dr. Isebong Asang, Program Manager of Community Advocacy Program said that the number of chicken pox cases is still at 60 and that aside from chicken pox it is monitoring measles break out as well due to an outbreak of the disease in Japan.
Asang said that although there are no measles cases reported in Palau it has mobilized Division of Customs and Bureau of Immigration officials to hand out cards to visitors about the measle outbreak in Japan.
She said measles and chicken pox have similar symptoms and that anyone who has fever or rash should immediately go to the doctor.
She said 911 or 4882450 or 4882552 can be contacted for any assistance.
The bureau also reiterated reminders on treating chicken pox by using wet compresses , calamine lotion and keeping the skin cool to ease itchy rash , or bathe on oatmeal or baking soda to relieve itching and encourage children to wash their hands and keep nails shot to prevent scratching and infecting the chicken pox blister.
The bureau added that the use of aspirin should be prevented to treat chickenpox as this can cause a serious reaction.
It added that Tylenol is advisable in treating fever and headache.
